This past week in class we went over how to connect business strategy to IS/IT. We discussed how businesses are being transformed by information systems. Very few businesses don't have a database of some sort to track inventory or customers. Most businesses now have websites which allow the user to interact with them from the comfort of their own homes. People can now collaborate on projects from all over the globe which gives rise to a greater depth of products and knowledge. Businesses are now becoming entrenched in IS/IT in order to just compete with businesses around them.
Businesses that use IT resources have a competitive advantage over companies that don't. They are able to deliver better performance and can even interact with customers and suppliers in real time. They are able to charge less for better products because they will have a better supplier chain than a non-connected business. This kind of gives me the idea that focusing on IS/IT as a company could be a matter of survival. If you are unable to keep pace or stay ahead of your competitors, you may find yourself on the losing side regardless what business strategy you are using.
This week we also had a lecture from Chris Hanks who is the director of the entrepreneurship program at UGA. He is a very dynamic speaker who gives you excited about business ownership. I have never been one who thought that I would work for myself but, after a hour of listening to Mr. Hanks, I was ready to quit my job and start a business.....any business.
Overall this was a very fun week at class and I feel that I learned a lot which will help me continue to grow into the person that I should be.
